Company is in the business of blood

Whether you're a Good Samaritan rolling up your sleeve or a burn victim awaiting platelets for healing relief, it's hard to imagine the local blood bank as a business.

BloodSource lead technician Ernest Knox moves racks of blood during a process that removes white cells to prepare the blood for transfusions. Even though it is a nonprofit, BloodSource has had to streamline its business practices to remain competitive with other potential suppliers of blood products.

Blood scientist Rebecca Doane prepares samples for testing. Each donated pint must undergo 13 tests to ensure that it is free of infectious agents.

BloodSource CEO Michael Fuller, at the new lab in Mather, says the bid process has made the firm "sharpen our pencils."
