First state report on hospital infections disappoints

More than 12,000 Californians die each year because of hospital-borne infections, but Thursday's report offered little help in determining which hospitals have done a better job at vanquishing superbugs and was virtually useless to consumers.

Michael and Kimberly Ratliff lost their daughter Charlee to infections after surgery earlier this year at UC Davis Medical Center to repair a hole in her heart. More than 12,000 Californians die each year of infections acquired at hospitals.
