Shriners hospital in Sacramento will start billing insurance companies

Sacramento's Shriners hospital, known for its free medical care for children, is going to start billing insurance companies for its services.

UC Davis stem cell researcher Paul Knoepfler, center, observes as Natasha Varcakhanova, a post doctoral fellow works in a laminar flow hood on iPS (induced puripotent stem) cells at Shriner's Hospital. "These cells are super sensitive and require a lot of thought," said Knoepfler. Knoepfler was just awarded a $2 million grant to look at why it is that some stem cells seem to cause tumors, and what we might be able to do about that before turning to stem cells as a potential medical treatment.
